Omar Sharif

 Omar Sharif, whose real name is Michel Dimitri Shalhoub (April 10, 1932 - July 10, 2015), is an Egyptian international actor. Among his most famous roles are the films Dr. Zhivago, The Fun Girl, and Lawrence of Arabia. Sharif was nominated for an Academy Award, as well as three Golden Globe Awards and a Caesar Award.


He was born Michel Dimitri Shalhoub in Alexandria, his father was a timber merchant, and he always wanted his son to work in this profession, but the young Michel was passionate about acting, which he started on the stage of Victoria College in which he was studying. Omar Sharif was a fellow of international director Youssef Chahine at Victoria College in Alexandria. He loved school theater, and presented many of his experiences when he was only twelve.

Omar Sharif married Egyptian actress Faten Hamama in 1955 after a great love story that is considered one of the greatest love stories in the history of Egyptian cinema. In the early sixties, he met the international director David Lean, who discovered him and presented him in many films. With Omar's preoccupation with the world, he began to neglect his wife and home, which led to his separation from Faten Hamama in the mid-seventies.

After his unparalleled success in his first film, Lawrence of Arabia, in 1962, he achieved great public fame, and the entire Western world was watching his films. Omar continued with the same director, David Lean, to play several roles in several films, including: Doctor Zhivago, Yellow Rolls Royce, Green Snow and many more in the following years.

He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama in 1966 for his role in the movie Doctor Zhivago, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Lawrence of Arabia, as well as the Golden Globe Award for a rising star, which he shared with: Terence Stamp and Keir Dola. , and Peter O'Toole. In 1962, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but did not win it, for his role in the film Lawrence of Arabia, and in 2004 he was awarded the Famous Artists of the Arab World Award in recognition of his cinematic giving during the past years, and he also won the Caesar Award for Best Actor for His role in the film Mr. Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Qur’an by François Duberon, and he received the Golden Lion Award from the Venice Film Festival for his overall work.
