Laila Mourad

 Laila Mourad (February 17, 1918 - November 21, 1995), an Egyptian singer and actress, is considered one of the most prominent singers and actresses in the Arab world in the twentieth century.


She was born in Alexandria to an Egyptian Jewish family and her name was Lilian. Her father is singer and composer Ibrahim Zaki Mordechai “Zaki Murad”, who performed the operetta of The Good Ten, which was composed by the musician Sayed Darwish.

She began her career with singing at the age of fourteen, when she was educated by her father, Zaki Murad, and the well-known composer, Daoud Hosni. And director Muhammad Karim in the movie (Long Live Love), and she changed her name to Laila Murad, and despite her weak acting performance, she attracted the attention of the Dean of Arab Theater Youssef Wehbe to present with him her second movie (Rainy Night) at the end of 1939.

When the Egyptian Radio House was established, it contracted with her to sing once a week, and the first concerts presented by the radio were on July 6, 1934, in which she sang a muwashshah (O gazelle, whose eye has bled kohl), then she was cut off from radio concerts because of her preoccupation with the cinema, and then she returned to it again in 1947 where she sang the song (Alby Dalily). Laila Murad sang about 1,200 songs, composed by great composers such as: Mohamed Fawzy, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Mounir Murad, Riyadh Al-Sunbati, Zakaria Ahmed and Al-Qasbaji.

Among her most famous songs are "The World is Ghanwa", "Dearest Than My Eyes", "Ya Sarqni With Eyelashes", "Shahat El Gharam", "Abjad Hawz", "Laughter Karkar", "The Preoccupied and Preoccupied", "Alby Dalily" and "Ya Habib" The soul", "I love two people together", "Hua Al-Dalal means quarrel" and other songs


Laila Murad first appeared as a singer only in the speaking version of the movie Victims in 1935, then she starred in 27 films, the first of which was the movie (Long Live Love) with the musician (Mohamed Abdel Wahab) in 1937, and her last movie in the cinema was (The Unknown Habib) in 1955 with Hussein Believe me, she retired from acting and continued for a while as a singer on the radio.

It is noted that the director Togo Mizrahi is the one she dealt the most with in the first stage of her cinematic life, as he directed her five films (between 1939-1944), while the one she dealt the most with later was her husband Anwar Wagdy, who directed her seven films (between 1945). -1953).

Laila Murad caused a sensation after the dress she wore in the song "Alby Dalily", which is from the movie of the same name, and the cost of the dress amounted to 400 pounds at the time, an amount that would buy a "building" building. The newspapers published that Laila wore a legendary dress that will go down in history.

She had announced her conversion to Islam in 1946, during the early months of Ramadan of that year, and she had declared her Islam in the sheikh of Al-Azhar in front of Sheikh Mahmoud Abu Al-Ayoun, and she continued on the Islamic religion until she passed away in 1995.


Anwar Wagdy got married while they participated in the movie (Laila, the girl of the poor), which was directed by Anwar Wagdy, and their marriage lasted for about 8 years, then they soon separated by divorce. Who gave birth to her son Zaki.

Laila Murad stayed away from the spotlight, and she was afraid that the audience would see her in a picture other than the one she was accustomed to in her films, until she died on November 21, 1995.
